Resumo O uso de genótipos resistentes é um dos principais métodos de controle de doenças no Brasil, sendo fundamental o melhoramento genético visando a obter novos genótipos resistentes, para suprir essa demanda. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar os parâmetros genéticos das variáveis resistência ao cancro, causado por Chrysoporthe cubensis e resistência à mancha foliar, causada por Cylindrocladium spp. e Kirramyces epicoccoides, bem como avaliar suas implicações na estratégia de melhoramento genético de Eucalyptus grandis. Foi instalado um teste de progênies de polinização aberta, em dois locais no Estado de São Paulo, nas regiões de Anhembi e Itatinga. O teste foi realizado em blocos casualizados, com 176 progênies e três testemunhas, uma por parcela, com 30 repetições em Itatinga e 28 repetições na região de Anhembi. A resistência ao cancro foi avaliada aos 12, 24 e 29 meses de idade na região de Anhembi e aos 15, 27 e 32 meses de idade, na região de Itatinga. A resistência à mancha foliar foi avaliada aos 12 e 24 meses de idade na região de Anhembi e aos 15 e 27 meses de idade, na região de Itatinga. Os parâmetros genéticos foram estimados, utilizando o software SELEGEN REML/BLUP®. Com a mesma população de seleção, verificou-se que, para a região de Itatinga, as estimativas de parâmetros genéticos indicam maior potencial para a seleção de genótipos resistentes ao cancro e à mancha foliar. Porém, para as condições edafoclimáticas da região de Anhembi, essa população apresenta potencial de seleção inferior, o que fica evidenciado pelos baixos valores de herdabilidade média individual de progênies estimados. Na região de Itatinga, foram obtidos valores de herdabilidade média individual de progênies para a resistência ao cancro e à mancha foliar, que variaram de moderado a alto, indicando que pode haver bons ganhos com a seleção neste local.

Abstract The use of resistant genotypes is one of the main methods of disease control in Brazil, the genetic improvement, aiming to obtain new genotypes that are resistant is fundamental to supply this demand. Therefore, the objective of this work was to estimate the genetic parameters of the variables: resistance to canker caused by Chrysoporthe cubensis and leaf spot caused by Cylindrocladium spp. and Kirramyces epicoccoides, and to evaluate their implications for the genetic improvement strategy of Eucalyptus grandis. An open pollination progeny test was installed in two locations in the state of São Paulo, in the regions of Anhembi and Itatinga. The test was carried out in randomized blocks, with 176 progenies and three witnesses, one per plot, with 30 repetitions in Itatinga and 28 repetitions in the Anhembi region. The canker resistance was assessed at 12, 24 and 29 months of age in the Anhembi region and at 15, 27 and 32 months of age in the Itatinga region. The resistance to leaf spot was evaluated. at 12 and 24 months of age in the Anhembi region and at 15 and 27 months of age in the Itatinga region. The genetic parameters were estimated using the SELEGEN REML/BLUP® software. It was found out, with the same selection population for the Itatinga region, estimates of genetic parameters indicate greater potential for the selection of resistant genotypes for canker and leaf spot. However, for the edaphoclimatic conditions of the Anhembi region, this population has a lower selection potential, which is evidenced by the low values of the estimated average progeny and individual heritability. In the region of Itatinga, values of average progeny and individual heritability were obtained for resistance to canker and leaf spot, which varied from moderate to high, indicating that there may be good gains with the selection in this location.

RESUMO O objetivo desse estudo é avaliar o ajuste das Redes Neurais Artificiais (RNA) para estimativa de altura e avaliação dos efeitos do consórcio em um plantio misto de Eucalyptus globulus (E) e Acacia mearnsii (A). O experimento foi instalado em 2005, em duas fazendas no município de Piratini - RS, onde foram plantadas as espécies Eucalyptus globulus (E) e Acacia mearnsii (A), em monocultura e plantio misto em linha simples (50%E:50%A - LS) e linhas duplas (50%E:50%A - LD). O treinamento e a avaliação das redes neurais foram realizados no software R-project com o pacote neuralnet. Todas as RNAs, desde as mais simples até as mais complexas apresentaram altos valores para Rŷy e baixos para Syx, VIÉS e RQEM, com resultados superiores nas RNA 3, 4 e 6, o que demostrou que as informações DAPmin, DAPmed e DAPmax são importantes atributos do povoamento. Além disso, as RNAs foram capazes de captar os diferentes padrões de crescimento demonstrados pelas espécies as diferentes formas de consórcio, sendo indicadas para a estimativa de altura em monoculturas e plantios mistos de Eucalyptus globulus e Acacia mearnsii, e apenas uma RNA pode ser necessária para representar toda a população.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to evaluate the fit of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for height estimation and evaluation of the effects of consortium in a mixed-species plantation of Eucalyptus globulus (E) and Acacia mearnsii (A). The experiment was installed in 2005, on two farms in the municipality of Piratini - RS, where was planted the species Eucalyptus globulus (E) and Acacia mearnsii (A), in monoculture and mixed in simple lines (50%E:50%A - SL), and double lines (50%E:50%A - DL). The training and evaluation of the networks were made in R-project with the package neuralnet. All ANNs, from the simplest to the most complex, showed high values for Rŷy and low for Syx, BIAS and RMSE, with superior results in ANN 3, 4, and 6, which demonstrates that the information of DBHmin, DBHmean, and DBHmax were important stand attributes. Furthermore, the ANNs were able to capture the different growth patterns shown by the species in the different forms of consortiums, therefore is indicated for the height estimation in monocultures and mixed plantations of Eucalyptus globulus and Acacia mearnsii, and only one ANN would be necessary to represent the entire population.

RESUMO Teca (Tectona grandis) é uma espécie florestal cultivada em regiões tropicais do mundo, devido às características de sua madeira e seu grande valor econômico no mercado. No Brasil, as plantações originais estão sendo substituídas por florestas clonais selecionadas, o que gera a necessidade e o interesse de proteger esse material genético com base na legislação vigente. Os requisitos legais para proteção de cultivares são que o genótipo seja resultante de melhoramento genético e apresentar distinguibilidade, homogeneidade e estabilidade (DHE). Este trabalho identifica descritores morfológicos em mudas de teca para auxiliar no processo de proteção dos clones da espécie. O estudo foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com avaliação de 7 clones e 15 mudas por clone, avaliados com 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias de idade. As informações foram organizadas com base nas matrizes de presença e ausência das variações para cada clone, por 21 características morfológicas. Posteriormente, foram estimadas medidas de similaridade genética, por meio do índice de Jaccard e o agrupamento pelo método UPGMA. Foi possível diferenciar os clones, com 12, 7, 9 e 11 caracteres morfológicos para compor os descritores morfológicos com 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias de idade, respectivamente. As características da lâmina foliar: comprimento, largura, relação comprimento/largura, intensidade da cor verde da folha e brilho da folha, foram comuns para todas as idades avaliadas, mas seus respectivos níveis de expressão foram diferentes.

ABSTRACT Teak (Tectona grandis) is a forest species cultivated in tropical regions worldwide, due to the traits of its wood and its great economic value on the market. In Brazil, original plantations are being replaced by selected clonal forests, which generate the need and interest to protect this genetic material based on the current legislation. The legal requirements for cultivar protection are that the genotype must result from genetic improvement and provide distinguishability, homogeneity, and stability (DHS). This work identifies morphological descriptors in teak cuttings to assist the clone protection process of the species. The study was conducted in a completely randomized design with the evaluation of 7 clones and 15 cuttings per clone, at 30, 60, 90, and 120 days old. The information was also organized based on the arrays of presence and absence of variations for each clone, for 21 morphological traits. Subsequently, genetic similarity measures were estimated using the Jaccard index and the UPGMA clustering method. The clones with the 12, 7, 9, and 11 morphological traits formed the morphological descriptors for the 30, 60, 90, and 120 days old cuttings, respectively. The traits of the leaf blade: length, width, length/width ratio, green intensity, and the brightness of the leaf, were common for all the evaluated ages, but their respective levels of expression were different.

RESUMO Durante o cultivo do eucalipto existem várias doenças que podem limitar sua produtividade, tal como as manchas foliares causadas por Cylindrocladium spp. e Kirramyces epicoccoides. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a resistência de progênies de Eucalyptus grandis a estas doenças. O teste de progênie com 176 progênies e três testemunhas comerciais para comparação foi instalado em dois locais: Anhembi e Itatinga, estado de São Paulo, Brasil. As avaliações de incidência e severidade de mancha foliar foram realizadas, aos 12 e 24 meses de idade (Anhembi) e aos 15 e 27 meses de idade (Itatinga). A severidade foi avaliada com uma escala que variou de um (sadia) a cinco (desfolha até 2/3 da copa). A incidência e severidade média obtida pelas progênies foram comparadas com as testemunhas (variedades comerciais) e entre locais. Foi realizado também a espacialização da doença nas áreas do teste. Algumas progênies apresentaram severidade média menor às testemunhas comerciais, indicando potencial para uso em programas de melhoramento para resistência à mancha foliar. Existe variação entre as progênies em relação a resistência a mancha foliar, logo a possibilidade de se obter ganhos com a seleção entre as melhores progênies.

ABSTRACT During cultivation of eucalyptus, there are several diseases, which can limit its productivity, such as leaf spots caused by Cylindrocladium spp. and Kirramyces epicoccoides. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the resistance of Eucalyptus grandis progenies to these diseases. A progeny test with 176 progenies and three commercial controls for comparison was installed in two locations: Anhembi and Itatinga, São Paulo State, Brazil. Leaf spot incidence and severity were evaluated when plants were 12 and 24 months old (Anhembi) and 15 and 27 months old (Itatinga). Severity was evaluated based on a scale varying from one (healthy) to five (up to 2/3 canopy defoliation). The incidence and mean severity obtained by progenies were compared to those of controls (commercial varieties) and between locations. Spatialization of the disease was also performed in the test areas. Some progenies had mean severity lower than that of commercial controls, indicating potential for use in breeding programs for resistance to leaf spot. There is variation among the progenies in relation to resistance to leaf spot and consequently possibility of gaining with the selection among the best progenies.

RESUMO O uso de resíduos vegetais carbonizados vem sendo resgatado e avaliado como alternativa para melhorar a qualidade do solo. O material gerado, denominado biocarvão, é o produto formado a partir da pirólise, que é a alteração térmica da biomassa em ambiente fechado, com suprimento limitado de oxigênio e em temperaturas relativamente baixas. A composição química e estrutural do biocarvão é altamente heterogênea, mas o pH é normalmente maior que sete. Algumas propriedades estão presentes em todos os biocarvões, incluindo alto teor de carbono e grau de aromaticidade, o que explica seu alto nível de recalcitrância. Contudo, a exata composição química e estrutural é dependente da combinação da matéria-prima e das condições de pirólise. Quando aplicado ao solo, o biocarvão pode aumentar o pH, a capacidade de troca de cátions, o teor de carbono orgânico e a disponibilidade de nutrientes; alterar a abundância e funcionamento de fungos micorrízicos e prover refúgio para microrganismos nos microporos do biocarvão; e melhorar a estrutura do solo e disponibilidade de água. Todas estas características de interação com o solo fazem com que a sua utilização no meio agrícola apresente normalmente efeitos positivos para o crescimento vegetal. Acredita-se também que a utilização de biocarvão possa contribuir para o sequestro de carbono, sendo considerado por muitos como “carbono negativo”, devido a sua capacidade de promover o crescimento vegetal e pela sua estabilidade no solo. Estudos com o biocarvão já atingiram proporções de escala mundial envolvendo diversas áreas e têm crescido muito nos últimos anos. No entanto, ainda existem muitas incertezas sobre a sua utilização na agricultura, devido principalmente ao fato de que os trabalhos publicados têm dado mais atenção a sua capacidade de manutenção e melhoria da fertilidade do solo e aumento da produtividade agrícola do que esclarecimentos dos possíveis riscos envolvidos na utilização do biocarvão.

ABSTRACT The use of carbonized plant biomass has been recovered and evaluated as an alternative of improving soil fertility. The material generated, called biochar, is the product formed by pyrolysis, which is the thermal decomposition of biomass in a closed container under limited supply of oxygen and at relatively low temperatures. The chemical and structural composition of biochar is highly heterogeneous, with the exception of pH, which is usually higher than seven. Some properties are present in all kinds of biochar, including high carbon content and degree of aromaticity, which explains its high level of recalcitrance. However, its exact chemical composition and structure depends on the combination of raw material and pyrolysis conditions. When applied to soil, biochar can increase pH, cation exchange capacity and organic carbon and nutrient availability, raises in the abundance and functioning of mycorrhizal fungi, providing refuge for micro-organisms in the biochar micropores and improving soil structure and water availability. All these features in the soil interaction make its use in the agriculture normally to have positive effects on plant growth. It is believed that the use of biochar can contribute to carbon sequestration, it is considered by many as “carbon negative” due to its ability to promote plant growth and its stability in the soil. Studies with biochar have reached worldwide proportions involving different areas, and have grown a lot in recent years. However, there are still many uncertainties about its use in agriculture, mainly because the published papers have given more focus to biochar ability to maintain and improve soil fertility and increase agricultural productivity than to clarify the possible risks involved in biochar utilization.

RESUMO Acacia mearnsii De Wild. é cultivada no Brasil para produção de tanino, celulose e energia. Atualmente, plantios clonais estão sendo estabelecidos, mas um dos fatores limitantes à produção de mudas é a ocorrência de podridão de miniestacas. Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a podridão de miniestacas de acácia-negra em três clones comerciais e determinar os agentes causais associados, em Triunfo/RS. Os materiais analisados foram miniestacas com podridão; brotações de minijardim aparentemente sadias; brotações com lesões escuras; substrato utilizado para o enraizamento das miniestacas; água utilizada para a irrigação; minicepas doentes; areia proveniente dos canaletões dos minijardins; tubetes; e britas provenientes da estufa. As coletas foram efetuadas em setembro/2015 e março/2016. Para detecção de fungos, utilizou-se os métodos de isolamento direto e isolamento indireto, diluição em série, teste com isca e plaqueamento de resíduos. Calonectria polizzii e Neopestalotiopsis clavispora são os agentes causais da podridão de miniestacas de acácia-negra. Brotações assintomáticas, tubetes usados, piso da casa de vegetação e substrato usado podem ser fontes de inóculo.

ABSTRACT Acacia mearnsii De Wild. is cultivated in Brazil for tannin, cellulose and energy production. Currently, clonal plantations have been established, but one of the limiting factors for seedling production is the occurrence of rot in minicuttings. This study aimed to evaluate rot in black wattle minicuttings in three commercial clones and to determine the associated causal agents in Triunfo/RS. The analyzed materials were rotten minicuttings, apparently healthy clonal minigarden sprouts; sprouts with dark lesions; substrate used for minicutting rooting; water used for irrigation; diseased ministumps; sand from clonal minigarden; plastic tubes; and cracked stones from the greenhouse floor. Samples were collected in September/2015 and March/2016. For detection of fungi, the used methods were direct isolation and indirect isolation, serial dilution, bait test and plating of residues. Calonectria polizzii and Neopestalotiopsis clavispora are the causal agents of rot in minicuttings. Asymptomatic sprouts, plastic tubes, greenhouse floor and the used substrate can be inoculum sources.

RESUMO O objetivo foi avaliar a eficiência dos modelos fenotípicos de competição, via análise espacial, na avaliação genética de testes de progênies de Pinus taeda L. Para isso foram utilizadas quatro covariáveis de competição para ajuste dos valores fenotípicos em um teste de progênies de P. taeda plantado em quatro diferentes locais no estado de Santa Catarina. O teste foi implantado em delineamento de blocos casualizados, com sete repetições, parcelas lineares de seis plantas e espaçamento de 2,5 m x 2,0 m. O teste instalado nos locais A, B e D possuem 63 famílias e no local C 53 famílias. Aos nove anos de idade foi efetuada a mensuração da variável diâmetro à altura do peito de todos os indivíduos. A presença ou não da competição foi baseada nos coeficientes de autocorrelação residual, que teve sua significância testada pelo teste de Durbin-Watson. No geral, o uso de covariáveis corrigiu o efeito da competição e as variâncias entre e dentro de parcela e o coeficiente de variação residual foram reduzidos. A análise espacial foi apropriada para validar a eficiência das covariáveis. A classificação pelo efeito genético dos indivíduos no teste de progênies foi extremamente alterada para o conjunto de dados com e sem o uso de covariáveis para os locais A e D, assim como a interação genótipo x ambiente. O uso dessas duas ferramentas é de suma importância na análise de dados em testes de progênies de P. taeda, pois os efeitos de competição podem conduzir a erros na seleção de indivíduos e na definição de zonas de melhoramento.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the phenotypic models of competition, through spatial analysis in the genetic evaluation of Pinus taeda L progenies. For this, four competition covariates were used to adjust the phenotypic values in a P. taeda progeny test installed in four different locations in the state of Santa Catarina. The test was implemented in randomized block design, with seven repetitions, linear plots containing six plants per plot in 2.5 m x 2.0 m spacing. The test installed in sites A, B, and D present 63 families and site C 53 families. At nine years old, the diameter at the breast height was measured for all individuals. The presence or absence of competition was based on the residual autocorrelation coefficients, which had its significance tested by the Durbin-Watson test. In general, the use of covariates corrected the competition effect. The variances among and within plots, as well as the residual variation coefficient, were reduced. The classification by the genetic effect of the individuals in the progeny test was extremely altered for this data set with and without the use of covariates for sites A and D, as well as the genotype x environment interaction. The use of these two tools is of great importance in the analysis of data in P. taeda progeny tests, since the effects of competition can lead to mistakes in the selection of individuals and in the definition of improvement zones.

RESUMOO Brasil é um grande produtor de painéis compensados, suas florestas de Pinus são as mais utilizadas nesse processo e grande parte dessa produção é destinada à indústria moveleira. Muitas espécies têm sido introduzidas no país para essa e outras finalidades, entre elas a Melia azedarach, que ainda requer diversos estudos tecnológicos para a melhor utilização de sua madeira. Nesse contexto, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a viabilidade de utilização da Melia azedarach para a produção de painéis compensados e o efeito da gramatura de adesivo e do tempo de prensagem sobre as propriedades dos painéis. Foram utilizadas cinco árvores provenientes de um plantio experimental localizado em Corupá, SC, das quais foram obtidas amostras para determinação da densidade básica (COPANT 461/1972) e das propriedades químicas (TAPPI 204, 1997; 207, 1999; 280, 1999; 212, 2002; 252, 2002), bem como para a obtenção das lâminas. Os painéis foram produzidos com dimensões de 500 mm x 500 mm x 10 mm (cinco lâminas), segundo um delineamento em arranjo fatorial (3x2) com três gramaturas (320 g/m2,360g/m2 e 400 g/m2) e dois tempos de prensagem (8 e 10 min), adesivo ureia-formaldeído, pressão específica de 1 MPa e temperatura de 110 °C. As propriedades dos painéis foram avaliadas a partir do ensaio de flexão estática (EN:310:2002) e resistência da linha de cola ao cisalhamento (EN 3141:2004 e EN 314-2:2002). Os resultados indicaram diferença estatística significativa dos efeitos principais: a gramatura e tempo de prensagem apenas no módulo de elasticidade no sentido perpendicular e a inexistência de diferença estatística significativa entre as médias a partir da interação dessas duas variáveis de resposta. Concluiu-se que a espécie apresenta viabilidade técnica para a produção de painéis compensados, podendo maximizar a produtividade e minimizar os custos de produção, por meio da utilização da menor gramatura de adesivo e do menor tempo de prensagem.

ABSTRACTBrazil is a major producer of plywood, where pine forests are the most used in this process, and much of this production is aimed at the furniture industry. Many species have been introduced in the country for this and other purposes, including the Melia azedarach, which still requires many technological studies for the best use of its wood. In this context, the objective of this research was to evaluate the feasibility of use of Melia azedarach for the production of plywood and the effect of the weight of adhesive and pressing time on the properties of the panels. 5 trees from an experimental planting located in Corupá, SC, were used, from which samples were collected for the determination of the density (COPANT 461/1972) and chemical properties (TAPPI 204:1997; 207: 1999; 280: 1999; 212:2002; 252:2002), and for obtaining the veneers. The panels were produced with dimensions of 500mm x 500mm x 10mm (5 veneers) according to a randomized block design in a factorial arrangement (3x2) with 3 weights (320 g/m2, 360 g/m2and 400 g/m2) and 2 pressing times (8 and 10 minutes), urea-formaldehyde adhesive, specific pressure of 1 MPa and temperature of 110 °C. The properties of the panels were evaluated from the static bending (EN: 310:2002) and resistance of the glue line to shearing (EN 314-1:2004 and EN 314-2:2002). The results indicated statistically significant difference between main effects: weight and pressing time only for the modulus of elasticity in the perpendicular direction, and the lack of significant differences between the means from the interaction of these two response variables. It was concluded that the species is technically feasible for the production of plywood, being able to maximize productivity and minimize production costs by the use of adhesive lighter weight and shorter pressing time.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo estabelecer um protocolo de micropropagação de Pinus taeda L. Brotações apicais de plântulas de cinco dias de germinação, de diferentes genótipos (F27, B05 e PC) foram cultivadas em meio de cultura WV5, acrescido de 44 µM de 6-benzilaminopurina (BAP) e de 0,05 µM de ácido α-naftalenoacético (ANA) durante 14 dias, seguido de quatro subcultivos para meio sem reguladores de crescimento. Explantes foram seccionados em brotações apicais e segmentos nodais para a multiplicação. Foram testados comprimentos diferentes dos explantes, concentrações de BAP e períodos de cultivo. O enraizamento foi induzido em meios de cultura WV5/2, WV3/2, GDm/2 e ágar-água, acrescidos de 2,68 µM de ANA e 0,44 µM de BAP, pelo período de nove dias, seguido de subcultivo para as mesmas formulações, sem reguladores por quatro semanas. Verificou-se que o genótipo influenciou a formação de brotações e enraizamento. O comprimento de 1,0 cm é recomendado para os segmentos nodais produzirem o maior número de brotações axilares. Para brotações apicais, os explantes de 0,5 cm cultivados em meio de cultura WV5 apresentaram melhores resultados de alongamento. O melhor período de subcultivo foi oito semanas, tanto para os segmentos nodais como brotações apicais. A maior percentagem de segmentos nodais com brotações (99,2%) e o maior número médio de brotações por explante (4,0) foram obtidos com o genótipo F27, em meio de cultura contendo 2,5 µM de BAP. Para brotações apicais, o melhor resultado para alongamento foi observado com explantes menores (0.5 cm) em meio de cultura WV5 (218,3%). A manutenção de microjardim clonal in vitro de brotações vigorosas foi obtida por dois anos em meio de cultura WV5, com subcultivos de oito semanas. O melhor resultado de enraizamento (55,6%) ocorreu com indução por nove dias em meio ágar-água com 2,68 μM de NAA e 0,44 μM de BAP. A aclimatização de mudas foi bem sucedida (85% de sobrevivência), de modo que foi estabelecido um protocolo de produção de mudas por micropropagação.

This work aimed to establish a micropropagation protocol for Pinus taeda L. Apical shoots from 5-day seedlings, of different genotypes (F27, B05 and PC), were cultured on WV5 medium supplemented with 44 µM 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 0.05 µM α-naphtaleneacetic acid (NAA), for 14 days, followed by subcultures on growth regulator-free medium. Explants were sectioned into apical shoots and nodal segments for multiplication. Different lengths of explants, BAP concentrations and cultivation periods were tested. Rooting was induced on WV5/2, WV3/2, GDm/2 and agar-water culture media supplemented with 2.68 µM NAA and 0.44 µM BAP for nine days, followed by a 4-week subculture on growth regulator-free medium. It was verified that genotype influenced shoot formation and rooting. The length of 1.0 cm is recommended for nodal segment explants to obtain a high number of axillary shoots. For apical shoots, 0.5 cm explant and WV5 medium formulation allowed the best results for elongation. The best period of subculture was eight weeks, both for nodal segments and for apical shoots. The higher percentage of nodal segments with shoots (99.2%) and the higher average number of shoots per explant (4.0) were obtained with F27 genotype in medium culture containing 2.5 µM BAP. For apical shoots, the best result for elongation was observed for the shorter explants (0.5 cm) on WV5 culture medium (218.3%). The maintenance of in vitro clonal micro garden of vigorous shoots was obtained for two years of 8-week subcultures on WV5 culture medium. The best rooting rate (55.6%) was obtained when shoots were inoculated in agar-water medium with 2.68 μM NAA and 0.44 μM BAP for nine days. Plantlets were successfully acclimatized (85% of survival), so a micropropagation protocol was established.

RESUMO Cryptomeria japonica é originária da região temperada do Japão onde é conhecida como 'sugi'. No Brasil, o plantio da espécie é recomendado em regiões altas e frias do sul do país, onde possui boa adaptação às condições edafoclimáticas. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as correlações entre variáveis meteorológicas e o crescimento de um povoamento de Cryptomeria japonica com 25 anos de idade. Para tal, foram coletados discos transversais de 30 diferentes árvores, compreendendo toda a amplitude de variação diamétrica. Após secos e lixados, os discos tiveram seus anéis anuais de crescimento medidos e correlacionados com dados meteorológicos, utilizando ferramentas de análise dendrocronológica. As séries de crescimento apresentaram uma intercorrelação de 0,668. O crescimento radial da espécie foi influenciado positivamente pela temperatura mínima do mês de setembro e pela temperatura média do mês de maio. Não houve correlação significativa do crescimento com a precipitação, embora tenham sido verificados picos de crescimento em anos mais chuvosos.

ABSTRACT Cryptomeria japonica is indigenous to the temperate region of Japan, where it is known as 'sugi'. In Brazil, the plantation of this species is recommended for the highlands and cold regions in the southern, where it is well adapted to the edaphoclimatic conditions. The aim of the study was to evaluate the correlation between meteorological variables and growth of a 25 years old Cryptomeria japonica stand. Cross-sectional discs from 30 different trees were collected, within all diametric classes. After dried and sanded, annual rings were measured and correlated with meteorological data by dendrochronological analysis tools. The growth series showed an intercorrelation of 0.668. The radial growth of the species was positively influenced by the minimum temperature of September and by the medium temperature of May. There was no correlation between growth and precipitation, although peaks of growth were observed in years with high precipitation.

ABSTRACT The supply of the timber industry with small diameter logs, derived from young forest plantations, has become a growing practice, leading many to question both the sawing process and the quality of the products obtained from these logs. In this context, the purpose of this study was to quantify the sawmill yield and financial aspects of Pinus taeda logs (20 to 57 cm diameter), produced in a 30 year-old rotation system with up to four thinning processes. It was possible to verify that the larger the log diameter at the smaller end, the greater the industrial yield. Statistical differences in yield were detected as from diameters of 35 and 45 cm. The relative economic benefits between small (20 to 25 cm) and large (>45 cm) diameter assortments were similar, but greater than those from intermediate (25 to 35 cm) diameter assortments.

RESUMO O abastecimento da indústria madeireira com toras de pequenos diâmetros, oriundas de plantios florestais jovens, tem sido uma prática comum, remetendo a questionamentos tanto sobre o processo industrial de desdobro como em relação à qualidade do produto final obtido dessas toras. Nesse contexto, o presente estudo teve como objetivo quantificar o rendimento industrial em serraria, bem como verificar os aspectos financeiros de toras de Pinus taeda (20 a 57 cm de diâmetro), produzidas em rotação de 30 anos e com até quatro desbastes. Verificou-se que quanto maior o diâmetro da ponta fina de uma tora, maior seu rendimento industrial. A partir de 35 e de 45 cm de diâmetro na ponta fina, há diferenciação estatística dos rendimentos. Os benefícios econômicos percentuais para sortimentos finos (20 a 25 cm) e grossos (>45 cm) são semelhantes e superiores aos sortimentos com diâmetros intermediários (25 a 35 cm).

RESUMO Sphaeropsis sapinea é um importante patógeno para Pinus radiata, causando seca de ponteiros e morte de árvores, em plantios comerciais. Este estudo teve como objetivo selecionar progênies de Pinus radiata resistentes ao patógeno. Mudas de 16 progênies de Pinus radiata foram inoculadas com três isolados monospóricos do patógeno, em condição de casa de vegetação. Foram avaliados o comprimento das lesões e o grau de secamento dos ponteiros. Os resultados indicaram que a metodologia de seleção precoce foi adequada para selecionar progênies de Pinus radiata resistentes ao Sphaeropsis sapinea. A herdabilidade média das progênies variou de acordo com o isolado testado e o critério de seleção utilizado.

ABSTRACT Sphaeropsis sapinea is an important pathogen for some Pinus radiata causing tip blight and death of trees, in commercial plantings. This study was developed to select Pinus radiata progenies resistant to the pathogen, for new plantings in Brazil. Seedlings tips of 16 Pinus radiata progenies were inoculated with three pathogen monosporic isolates of Sphaeropsis sapinea, under greenhouse conditions. Lesions length and tip blight degree were evaluated. Responses of progenies to the pathogen varied according to tested isolate. The results indicated that early selection methodology was adequate to select Pinus radiata progenies resistant against Sphaeropsis sapinea. Average heritability of the progenies varied according to tested isolate and the selection criterion used.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar diferenças genéticas entre três grupos de matrizes de Cedrela fissilis a partir de variáveis quantitativas juvenis em teste de progênies, para delinear zonas de coleta e uso de sementes da espécie na região de estudo, bem como avaliar a variabilidade genética do material amostrado. Instalou-se um teste de progênies, em viveiro, a partir de sementes de 48 matrizes amostradas nos Municípios de Rio Negrinho, Mafra e São Bento do Sul, no Estado de Santa Catarina; e em Lapa, Rio Negro, Campo do Tenente e Antonio Olinto, no Estado do Paraná. Das matrizes coletadas, 33 encontravam-se distribuídas em três grupos espaciais e 15 dispersas na região. O delineamento em blocos casualizados com oito repetições e 20 plantas por parcela foi empregado. Os dados avaliados incluíram: índice de velocidade de emergência, diâmetro do colo e altura das mudas (aos 61, 102 e 145 dias após a semeadura); sobrevivência, número de folhas por muda, massa seca da parte aérea e da raiz e área foliar da terceira folha totalmente expandida a contar do ápice. A metodologia de máxima verossimilhança restrita foi utilizada para a análise estatística, com o auxílio do software SELEGEN. Verificou-se que os caracteres juvenis apresentam elevado controle genético, podendo ser utilizados para avaliação da variabilidade genética de amostras de populações da espécie. Os três grupos de matrizes delimitados espacialmente não apresentam diferenças genéticas significativas, sendo possível inferir que as três áreas pertencem a uma mesma zona de coleta e uso de sementes

The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic differences among three matrix groups of Cedrela fissilis based on quantitative juvenile variables on a progeny test to define seed collecting zones and use of seeds of this species in the study region as well as to evaluate genetic variability of the sampled material. A progeny test was established in a nursery with seeds from 48 seed trees collected in the municipalities of Rio Negrinho, Mafra and São Bento do Sul, state of Santa Catarina, and in the municipalities of Lapa, Rio Negro, Campo do Tenente and Antonio Olinto, state of Paraná. Of the collected seed trees, 33 sampled trees were distributed in three sites and 15 trees were dispersed in the studied region. It was used a complete random block design, with 8 replicates and 20 plants per plot. Evaluated data included: emergency rate; seedling base diameter and height (61, 102 and 145 days after the seeds were sowed); seedling survival; number of leaves per seedling; aerial section dry mass and root dry mass; and the foliar area of the third fully expanded leaf measured from the apical meristem. The Maximum Restricted Likelihood Method (REML) was used, using the software SELEGEN for analysis. It was found that the juvenile characters are strongly genetically controlled and they can be used to estimate genetic variability of population samples of Cedrela fissilis. The three groups of trees spatially limited did not significantly differ among each other, allowing to conclude that the three areas are part of the same tree seed transfer zone.

O presente trabalho objetivou comparar os componentes da variação genética e ganho genético obtidos através da seleção individual, combinada e pelo índice multi-efeitos em progênies de seringueira [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd ex Adr. de Juss.) Müell. Arg.], considerando-a como espécie alógama e de sistema reprodutivo misto, com taxa de aufecundação de 22%. Vinte e duas progênies de meio-irmãos foram plantadas nas Estações Experimentais de Pindorama, Votuporanga e Jaú, no estado de São Paulo, no delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com cinco repetições e dez plantas por parcela. Aos três anos de idade o caráter produção de borracha seca foi avaliado. Os resultados demonstraram haver variabilidade genética nas populações, bem como caracterizaram Pindorama como um ambiente mais propício para a expressão da referida variabilidade. As herdabilidades ao nível de indivíduos são consideravelmente afetadas ao assumir progênies de polinização aberta como sendo de meio-irmãos. Superestimativas consideráveis de ganhos genéticos ocorrem na seleção individual, combinada e índice multi-efeitos, quando não se considera o sistema reprodutivo misto para a seringueira. A seleção com base no índice multi-efeitos maximiza o progresso genético e deve ser utilizada.

The components of genetic variation and genetic gain obtained with three selection methods - individual, combined and multi-effect index selection - were compared in rubber tree [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg.] progenies. The rubber tree is a cross pollinating species with a mixed reproductive system in which the self pollination rate is 22%. Twenty-two half sib progenies were planted at experimental stations at Pindorama, Votuporanga and Jaú, in São Paulo State, using a randomized and complete block design, with five replications and ten plants per plot. Dry rubber production was assessed when the plants were three years old. Based on the genetic variability of the populations, Pindorama was the best environment for the expression of variability. At the individual level, heritability was seriously affected when random progenies from an open pollinating population were considered as half sib progenies. Considerable overestimation of genetic gains occurred during individual, combined and multi-effect index selection when the rubber tree reproductive system was not considered as mixed. Selection based on the multi-effect index maximizes genetic progress and should be used more in rubber tree breeding programs.
